The five species of Pacific Salmon are truly the lifeblood of the Pacific Northwest. As small fry they feed other fish and birds; once they make their way out into the ocean they feed orca and other marine mammals, not to mention humans. Upon their return migration to their home rivers, bears, wolves, small mammals and birds feast on their spawning bodies. And finally, their rotting carcasses make their way into the soil of the raincoast forests, until even the trees hold salmon DNA. This 10" x 8" black micron pen drawing shows how the salmon (in this particular case, a coho) is the anchor of all the other life on the coast.
